Lieutenant General Md. Shafiqur Rahman, OSP (BAR), SPP, afwc, psc is a three-star ranked retired general of Bangladesh Army. He carries a long 38 years’ experience of serving the nation at home and abroad including five years of active service in Chittagong Hill Tracts and war-torn Somalia, four years peacekeeping across Africa, Asia and Middle East. He was conferred with Bangladesh Army Medals, ‘Sena Parodorshita Padak– SPP’ in early 2014, ‘Outstanding Service Padak – OSP’ in 2018 and 2019 consecutively for excellence in military professionalism. Lieutenant General Shafique is a quintessence of a new generation professional military officer with diversified interest and knowledge on geo-politics, strategies, national security, nation-building, development and economics issues. He is widely reputed for his interest in creative and challenging undertakings. General Shafique is a trend setter and known for his pleasant personality and demeanour.
Prior to his retirement in January 2021, General Shafique was the Chief of General Staff of Bangladesh Army and before that he served as the Director General of Special Security Force. The General has the rare honour of commanding three Infantry Divisions including prestigious 24 Infantry Division in Chittagong. As Brigadier General he commanded an Infantry Brigade and served as the Director of Military Operations in the Army Headquarters. He has the distinction of serving in all important command, staff and instructional assignments at home and abroad which a professional military officer may dream of.

General Shafique began his sophomore years in Bangladesh Military Academy and earned his graduation in Bachelor of Arts from Chittagong University in 1984. Later in 1997 he obtained his ‘Masters of Defence Studies’ from the National University of Bangladesh. He was also awarded with the ‘Presidential Gold Medal’ in April 2014 for academic excellence in the Master of Security Studies degree under Bangladesh University of Professionals. He has the honour of obtaining a diploma in Strategic Planning and Development from Cranfield University of the United Kingdom. He attended number of international seminars, workshop and symposiums in different countries and regions of the world.

Lately the General has developed interest in the study of national development goals with a focus on Migrant Remittance, Development and Investment. He already presented two papers in the International Conference on Business and Economics organised by Faculty of Business Studies of Dhaka University in 2016 and 2017 titled, “International Remittance and Overseas Deployment of Formal Forces: A New Weapon Complementing the Battle against Poverty” and “Formation of More Secured Cyber Climate: Case Study of a Public Office in Bangladesh.” For his consistent interest in the study of Remittance he was invited to present a Paper and become a Panellist in The Global Forum on Remittances, Investment and Development (GFRID) organised by Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM), the Central Bank of Malaysia, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the World Bank Group. Currently he is undergoing a PhD programme under Faculty of Business Studies in the Dhaka University.

As part of military professional development, he had undergone several important training courses at home and abroad. He attended both Basic and Advance courses on ‘Prohibition of Chemical Weapons Convention’ from the Organisation for Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, The Hague, Netherlands. He is also the proud alumnus of both Defence Services Command and Staff College and National Defence College of Bangladesh. General Shafique is also an honour graduate of Philippines Army Command and General Staff College. The General has undergone diploma courses from United Nations Institute for Training and Research on “Peacekeeping and International Conflict Resolution”, “Global Terrorism”, “The Conduct of Humanitarian Relief Operations”, “International Humanitarian Law and the Law of the Armed Conflict”. A significant part of his military professional life was spent as members of the faculty in Bangladesh Military Academy and School of Infantry and Tactics. He also had the honour of serving as the Directing Staff and Senior Instructor at the prestigious Defence Services Command and Staff College, Mirpur, Bangladesh.

Wearing Blue Helmet General Shafique served in the trouble-prone African Country, Somalia during the most critical period 1993-94. Later he was assigned as the Military Advisor in the Department of Peacekeeping Operations in the UN Headquarters, New York, USA for a period of 3 years. As a member of the Integrated Operational Teams (IOTs) of Asia Middle East Division of the Office of Peace Operations of UNDPKO, he was responsible for providing first hand military advice and coordination of operations of seven important UN Peacekeeping Missions, namely, UNTSO, UNIFIL, UNDOF, MINURSO, UNMIT, UNMOGIP and UNAMA .
As Area Commander and General Officer Commanding of the Divisions General Shafique kept himself profoundly engaged in developing the community, hospitals, schools/colleges, and specially, facilities for disabled/children. He is a keen golfer. He devotes much of his times travelling and reading. He is happily married to Begum Ruksana Shafiq and they have two grown-up sons.
